You should use BookML when:

  you value the longevity of LaTeXLaTeX as a format

And if you have an Overleaf plan, it’s very easy to start. It really boosted adoption in Leeds, and between BookML, bookdown and Quarto, we are close to 100% HTML, with occasional PowerPoint pockets.¹¹ 1 Unverified claim!

You may want to look elsewhere if:

  you prefer more modern tools and languages

  you need high interactivity, notebook integration, and similar

  you want something faster

Then tools like Quarto are probably a better fit.
